Jen Archer-Martin is a spatial designer, researcher and educator. She currently operates her own small consultancy, i roto ltd., based out of the northern suburbs of Pōneke (Wellington). i roto is kaupapa-led, contributing whichever design, research or education skills are most required to support the needs and aspirations of a project and the people it serves. Recent work has involved supporting iwi, hapū and whānau Māori to realise their aspirations for wellbeing-enhancing living, learning, working and healthcare environments. Jen takes a Te Tiriti-led approach to her work, aiming to support tino rangatiratanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the foundations of a thriving Aotearoa for all.
Jen was a research and teaching academic at Massey University College of Creative Arts, Wellington, New Zealand from 2012-2023. Her research and teaching centre around a bicultural philosophy of care that is played out through spatio-temporal practices. Her work explores how everyday and evental environments set the stage for acts of care, manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga for ourselves, others and the world around us, thus facilitating the wellbeing of interconnected ecologies. Jen’s mahi is underpinned by kaupapa Māori and Te Tiriti-led approaches that reflect her identity as both tangata whenua and tangata Tiriti.
Prior to her work as an academic, Jen was a practicing spatial designer for seven years, both in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, Aotearoa, and London, England. Her work covered a wide range of spatial design practices, including interior, architectural and event design.
